Comparing Plastic Card Prices- Apples, Oranges and Lemons

30.9.09

When shopping for a car, the wise consumer collects all the data he can on each vehicle he considers - mileage, petrol consumption, body wear and tear - then he takes these things into consideration when he makes the final decision on which car has the best value. It is not always the car that has the lowest price, but rather the car that has the lowest cost of ownership. Will it need frequent repairs? Will it need to visit the petrol station too often? Will it get me to where I need to go?

The same tactic must also be used when considering and comparing the offerings out there in the plastic card market. A low cost per card price is not always indicative of the overall cost of the project.

Are there set up costs? Is the cost per card inclusive of all of the features needed on the card - including magnetic encoding, personalization, etc? Are there confusing price breaks?

Pricing that seems low at first glance, might actually have charges hidden in the fine print of the quotation. Make sure that when you request a price for a card, that you are getting finished card pricing, because often it can increase your cost per card by as much as 100%, depending on the volume and features you are looking for.

At Cards Plus, we don't have any hidden charges - or minimum quantities for that matter. The only minimum charge is R50.00 for an invoice minimum. All of our cards quotes are for finished card pricing - and if you request a line item charge for an added feature such as personalization, we will notate it, and even figure the finished cost for you.

We have our clients best interest at heart, and we show it by our integrity when we send out our quotation. Give us a chance to provide a quotation on your next project, and we will show you that we have the best solution on the market.

A Different Angle on Recycled Plastic PVC Cards

16.9.09

In the ever growing environmentally conscious world we live in, awareness as to how we are impacting the world is taking a forefront in our consumerism. Because of this awareness, there is a very strong marketing strategy taking place which urges consumers to "think green" and make choices as to how their purchases impact the world.

Companies, on all fronts, are using this angle to market themselves anew - pushing products that are considered "environmentally friendly" and "green". This designation, however is ambiguous (see our recent post on the "corn card"). In addition, it can be narrow minded, not taking into consideration the overall impact.

A new article has been posted by CR80 News regarding one aspect of the "green movement" in plastic card printing - using recycled pvc plastic-gives a balanced glance at many of the issues involved. Using recycled materials is of course, a responsible approach to good consumerism - "reduce, reuse, recycle", however to make a truly educated decision as to whether to chose recycled plastic over "virgin pvc", one must take into full consideration all angles and implications, then base a decision on these facts. Being bullied and guilted into spending more money for the sake of one companies new marketing angle, is not a responsible way to move the world into thoughtful consumerism.

At Cards Plus, it is our desire to be responsible citizens. We offer a range of plastics to choose from - some more environmentally friendly than others. We also recycle our waste material whenever possible. However, it is not our desire to jump on the newest environmental bandwagon, for the sake of seeming to be "green" when in fact, it is not. Yes, we must be responsible. Yes, we must take care of the world we have been blessed with - but our clients will never be guilted or bullied into putting their hard earned money into a product that does not fit their needs and requirements. This is our committment to them, and to you.

Plastic Card Printers - which one is right for you?

19.6.09

A quick search on Google for plastic card printers brings out a huge variety of brands, models and features available to anyone looking for a plastic card printer. But how can you know which one is right for you? How do you know what features are important and which ones are just "bells and whistles"?

Most people start out looking for the most affordable printer, which is understandable. Everyone wants the best for the least. However, it is important to consider other factors as well.

First, it is important to look at what your needs are. Are you looking to print a standard ID card? Do you need a printer that has the capability to provide an excellent full colour image? Do you need a fast printer that has the capability to print a high quantity of cards, or one that is designed to print smaller volumes? Each of the questions brings about a different answer...and one that goes beyond the price of the printer.

It is also important to look at the reliability of the printer. What type of reputation does this printer have? Does it have a good warrantee? Is it backed by a company who will be able to offer quick and trustworthy service, should it be needed. These are all questions that must be taken into consideration when evaluating the brands and models of plastic card printers currently on the market.

Our experience in the plastic card industry has given Cards Plus tried and true knowledge in what is available as well as what advantages and disadvantages are found in each brand of printer. It was with this knowledge that we have put our name behind Digital Identification's EdiSecure Plastic Card Printers. Not only does Digital Identification Solutions have the same customer focused, solution based business model, but they provide a product that is trustworthy, innovative and solid. From their affordable Value Line of desktop Plastic card ID Printers, to their highly secure XID Retransfer Printers, they provide consistantly excellent printers that far outshine their competition. And while we certainly understand that there are many in South Africa who are comfortable with their current brand of printer (and we will gladly assist them with any needs they might have), we truly believe that Edisecure is the best available - it's not the cheapest, but it is affordable. And it truly gives the best value for money.

We invite anyone who is interested to come by our offices and see a demonstration of EdiSecure brand printers - the cappucino is on us! Contact our customer service department to schedule an appointment. Call 011 894 3914 or 086 16 CARDS (22737)

Environmentally Friendly Plastic??

A growing concern in the world today is our impact on the environment, and a new consciousness has arisen. A desire to be environmentally consciencious is filtering into many consumer based decisions - including our use of plastic cards.

At first glance, the newest kid on the block - PLA - otherwise known as "corn plastic" seems like the best alternative. In fact, a large retail chain in South Africa has adopted this as their plastic of choice, marking themselves as environmentally friendly. However, a few very important details have been overlooked, and this warrants a closer look.

First, the claim that the card is "biodegradable" needs to be called into question. Polyactic Resin - PLA is a byproduct of industrial lactic acid, which is derived from corn. Advocates of PLA claim that it is compostable into a fertilizer, which is true. What isn't widely known is that it requires very special treatment - not the type that comes from your garden's compost pile, or your local landfill. The Smithsonian magazine recently reported

" PLA is said to decompose into carbon dioxide and water in a “controlled composting environment” in fewer than 90 days. What’s a controlled composting environment? Not your backyard bin, pit or tumbling barrel. It’s a large facility where compost—essentially, plant scraps being digested by microbes into fertilizer—reaches 140 degrees for ten consecutive days. So, yes, as PLA advocates say, corn plastic is “biodegradable.” But in reality very few consumers have access to the sort of composting facilities that can make that happen. NatureWorks has identified 113 such facilities nationwide—some handle industrial food-processing waste or yard trimmings, others are college or prison operations—but only about a quarter of them accept residential foodscraps collected by municipalities.

Moreover, PLA by the truckload may potentially pose a problem for some large-scale composters. Chris Choate, a composting expert at Norcal Waste Systems, headquartered in San Francisco, says large amounts of PLA can interfere with conventional composting because the polymer reverts into lactic acid, making the compost wetter and more acidic. “Microbes will consume the lactic acid, but they demand a lot of oxygen, and we’re having trouble providing enough,” he says. “Right now, PLA isn’t a problem,” because there’s so little of it, Choate says. (NatureWorks disputes that idea, saying that PLA has no such effect on composting processes.) In any event, Norcal says a future PLA boom won’t be a problem because the company hopes to convert its composters to so-called anaerobic digesters, which break down organic material in the absence of oxygen and capture the resulting methane for fuel.'" An additional article on PLA's recycle-ability can be found at Oregon Live

Second, one must take into consideration the use of a food source to supply a consumer product. An excellent article at Guardian UK states "Bioplastics compete for land with biofuels and food crops. About 200,000 tonnes of bioplastics were produced last year, requiring 250,000-350,000 tonnes of crops. The industry is forecast to need several million acres of farmland within four years." With growing movements toward biofuels, and now food based plastics, what will come of our food crops?

Third, concern has been raised about the liklihood of emissions of greenhouse gas, methane. Again the Guardian reports:

"Concern is mounting because the new generation of biodegradable plastics ends up on landfill sites, where they degrade without oxygen, releasing methane, a greenhouse gas 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. This week the US national oceanic and atmospheric administration reported a sharp increase in global methane emissions last year.

"It is just not possible to capture all the methane from landfill sites," said Michael Warhurt, resources campaigner at Friends of the Earth. "A significant percentage leaks to the atmosphere."

"Just because it's biodegradable does not mean it's good. If it goes to landfill it breaks down to methane. Only a percentage is captured," said Peter Skelton of Wrap, the UK government-funded Waste and Resources Action Programme. "In theory bioplastics are good. But in practice there are lots of barriers."

In theory, PLA is a biodegradeable plastic, made from a renewable resource, however, it is clear, that at this time, this is not the most environmentally friendly plastic available.

While no perfectly "Green" plastic seems to exist at this stage, PET is a plastic worth considering. An acronym for poly (ethylene terephthalate), PET is a thermalplastic polymer of the polyester family containing the chemical elements of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. It's carbon foot print is quite comparable to the carbon foot print of all other cards whether considered green or not. (see article at Creditcard.com) In addition it is a enviromentally friendly plastic, is recyclable and does not create harmful gases or pollute the environment.

As technology, and consumer cries for greener products continue to grow, more products producing less of a demand on our environment will become more commonly available. Until then, be sure to take in the entire picture, and make an informed decision. Be wise, not just smart!

Magnetic Stripe – the Facts Revealed

19.5.09

Technology can seem mysterious and sometimes daunting, but once explained, it becomes useful and familiar. It is then that its full power is loosed and one can utilize it for all it was meant to be.

These days, that simple black stripe on the back of your bank card seems somewhat outdated – so “yesterday” as the youth today would say- compared to the glitzy looking smart chip. However, it has not failed have a very fitting use for those who are in need of an affordable, straight forward way to collect and maintain data.

The stripe itself is a band of magnetic material – and it is capable of storing data by the modification of the iron-based particles through the process of encoding. The stripe is “read” by physical contact and swiping past a reading head.

Two types of magnetic stripes are available – each with its own level of strength, or coercivity – high-coercivity (Hi/Co) and low-coercivity (Lo/Co). Each stripe features 3 Tracks for encoding - Track 1 holds 79 alpha/numeric characters; Track 2, 40 numeric; Track 3, 107 numeric characters

How it functions:
As outlined, it is obvious that a magnetic stripe is simply a storage device. Its “magic” is held in the program that the magnetic reader communicates with.
The code, be it simply a name and ID number, or an encrypted code, containing secure information, is read into the program, then it, depending on its design, accomplishes the task that is required.

An excellent article on magnetic stripe cards and readers can be found at Magnetic Stripe Systems - A Primer .

Cards Plus, manufacturers and distributors of printed cards and card printing equipment, can assist with the printing and encoding of magnetic stripe cards. If you would like to discuss the potential use of a magnetic stripe in your card project, contact Cards Plus at 086 16 CARDS or 011 894 3914.

To Print or Not To Print - THAT is the Question!

28.3.09

For many people who are looking into adding plastic cards to their business, the big question is what is the most cost effective solution for me? Is this something that will add value to my business for having it, or is there a less expensive solution for me?

These are very valid questions, and definitely worth the research. The mistake most easily made, however is the analysis of only the cost of the materials and machine.

For some, laminate cards are a seemingly less expensive option.

Back in the "olden days", laminate cards were "it". They offered a water proof, more durable option to the previously popular heavy paper stock cards. However, the actual process of making the card was painful. The machine had to warm up, the paper had to be printed, then placed into the special sleeve, then run through the machine...trimmed.... It was laborious. And to do several at a time was cumbersome. Nevermind that someone had to more or less be assigned to do only this task for a significant time period. Then of course there was the durability- a little wear and the dog earred cards delaminated and needed to be printed again.
Painful and costly.

If one was to only look at the cost of the machine and materials versus the cost of a PVC card printer and consumables, one might easily demise that laminated cards were a more cost effective solution, however, as illustrated above, when consideration is made for durability and time investment, never mind the less than professional image that a laminated card provides, it actually can COST a company money in the end.

The lesson here? In finding the right solution for your company, don't simply stop at the actual cost of the items. Factor in to your costing the durability of the card as well as the time investment needed to print your cards - and add on as the bonus the fact that you will have a finished, colourful and professional looking item at the finish.

At Cards Plus, we offer a variety of solutions for our clients - from high quality card printers to large and small volume preprinted cards, to our very popular "Quick Card" service, with no minimum quanity, and a speedy turnaround time.

Your Source for Card Printer Consumables!

15.3.09

Back in the day when McDonald's had only sold a million burgers, they stumbled across a great customer service method - don't just offer a burger and be satisfied. Offer french fries, a drink and maybe a sundae for dessert as well.

In our busy society there is value in the "one stop shop". Sourcing individual items is a time consuming task - and time is money. Perhaps you already have your card printer, but your blank cards are low, and you know that the ribbon you put in last month is getting down to it's last few images. Perhaps you have an event coming up, and you know that you will need not only plastic cards, but lanyards and card holders as well. Or maybe you don't have any of these items - only the need to get your company's ID badges printed a.s.a.p. We can help!

We carry stock of the most commonly used Edisecure, Zebra, Datacard and Fargo print ribbons. And if it isn't so common, we have local and overseas suppliers who can provide them in a blink of an eye. We also carry premium PVC plastic cards, both white and coloured (including metallic), Hi Co and Lo Co magnetic stripe cards and assorted card accessories. Everything you will need to accomplish the task ahead of you.

So let us give you a hand and provide you with very competively priced, quality card printer ribbons, plastic cards and card accessories that will make you look great when your project is completed.

Can Do Files - Saving the Day

5.3.09

There are always those moments in life when despite the best made plans and preparation - things fall apart. And suddenly one is faced with a crisis that requires immediate action.

Our "Cards Plus Can Do" update is an opportunity we had this last week to help someone save the day - and just in the nick of time.

A very prestigious event was planned by one of our clients - much thought and preparation was made - even down to the red carpet for the VIP guest who was arriving to this special conference. One of the smaller pieces of this event were the plastic name badges that everyone would wear - and wouldn't you know that the client's card printer went down. A very stressed coordinator called our offices to see if we could assist in printing the plastic name badges and have them to her event in record time.

Thanks to our amazing and flexible staff we were able to come to her aid and print up the 50+ plastic cards she needed and hand deliver them to her event - just hours before the event began.

Our convenient Card Bureau service provides for instances such as these. No minimum card order, quick turnaround, helpful staff, and of course beautiful plastic cards. These are the things that make Cards Plus successful, and give us an opportunity to be a help to those in those who find themselves in the midst of a bit of a crisis.

It's our job, and we love it.

Can Do Files - One Time Print Solution

27.1.09

At Cards Plus, our goal is to provide solutions that fit our client's needs- going to any length within our power.

Our latest CAN DO project involved a company who organizes events. Most specifically, they help with all the nitty gritty details involved in large scale events. Our client contacted us late in December looking for a cost effective solution for printing ID badges for a fairly large sporting event being held in Johannesburg this month. We could have offered him one of our New Year's Special Printers at a great discount - however this is a one time event, and he cannot justify a capital expense at this point.

Cards Plus to the rescue! We offered this client our DCP 240+ on a lease agreement. He can now print his ID badges in the short time span he needs to, paying for only the consumables needed and a small lease fee.

Perhaps you have a project that has unique circumstances, or you are looking for a solution perfectly tailored to your needs. At Cards Plus we will do everything we can within our power to find you the solution you need. Give us a call at 011 894 3914 or check our our web page at www.cardsplus.co.za

Going Against the Flow

19.1.09

Cards Plus has never really fit into the mold of typical business in South Africa. Many of our clients have commented on our level of customer service, our quality of product and our desire to keep our clients the most important part of our day. We have been told that our expectations are too high and that our high standards are unrealistic.

In response, we say "Bah Humbug". We do believe that our clients are the most important part of our business, and that giving them the best service, product and information helps them to become the best that they can be. And this drives our every decision.

To celebrate the beginning of 2009, one that we believe- despite what some may say- is going to be a great year - we want to pass on to our clients a boost in the form of a great sale on direct to card printers and ribbons.

Our New Year's Special, the Edisecure DCP 240+, a dynamo of a card printer, is on sale for an unprecedented price. Available with or without magnetic encoders, you can now launch your access control system, membership program, or loyalty program without breaking the bank.

The DCP 240+ has a fantastic record for reliabilty, ease of use and quality of print. Coupled with accompanying software, Card Five Vision, it makes printing your plastic cards a joy rather than a chore.

Give us a call at our offices - 011 826 4915 (South Africa) or check our our company at www.cardsplus.co.za and see why we are pleased to "go against the flow" and offer our clients all the assistance they need to accomplish their goals for 2009

Can Do Files - The Perfect Match

12.1.09

Can Do Files!

Sometimes, knowing what has been done helps when formulating a plan. This is one of the reasons we have our Can Do Files - not just to show you WHAT we can do, but HOW you can put your project together as well.

One of our latest projects has melded our high tech Edisecure XID Card Printers with a very well organized database management company.

This company's challenge is in printing medium volume sporting credentials for athletes who compete both on amateur and professional levels. Local and national clubs sign up for this great service and request their member cards on an as needed basis. Our client assembles this information and makes it available to us via their own internet based database. Once we've printed the card, their database marks it as "finished", eliminating the possibilities of duplicate prints and follow up on missed cards.

Orders varying from 100 - 300 cards are printed in a matter of 3-5 days, and by weeks end, the athletes have a finished card, with identification, photo, ranking and more printed on a stunning, durable PVC card, which will enable them to compete at the levels they are qualified for.

It's a perfect match.
